Halaweh, Homemade Halvah

Easy Halvah with Sesame Seeds

I remember the endearing traditions back in Sitto’s day during the Christmas season. Sitto and her Syrian lady friends would delight in making something homemade to take on holiday visits. I can still reflect upon the smiles of delight on their faces these many years later. That got me to thinking that this year, with all that we are experiencing in our world, something made in our kitchen will surely brings a much-needed warmth to all.

Almond Halvah

One of my recommendations is Halvah. Sometimes when I mention it, I'm always amazed to find out that some people have never tasted it or don't even know Halvah! It's Middle Eastern fudge!  I love it so much that I had to put two versions in my cookbooks. One is made with sesame seeds and the other with almonds. Both make great take-alongs to a Christmas dinner or as a homemade gift this season.

The Easy Halvah version is more traditional with a sesame Tahini base, Sugar Syrup, our basic Syrian Shirreh and honey. You can add sesame seeds or nuts in it or on top, your choice.

Almond Halvah with Chocolate

The Almond version is so good coated with chocolate. It's delicious for snacking and it always brings a note of surprise to those who've never tried it. Having some on hand is surely a healthier alternative than most sweets. I think it's why every Syrian, Jewish and Middle Eastern specialty shop has Halvah on their counters. In any case, if you're not near an ethnic shop, try this...just for fun or gifting!
