Butlawa Frengia, Baked Pudding Dessert, French Style
If you want to be "famous" in the kitchen, make this Syrian specialty, Baked Pudding Dessert, French Style. We call it Butlawa Frengia in Arabic. This wonderfully sweet custard pudding seems like you worked all day in the kitchen. There is no crust but, as it bakes, the creamy middle is created, rewarding that first forkful with oohs and ahhhs!
This is just one of the many standbys that our Syrian family depends upon when we have a special dinner or a crowd over to visit. Why? Because the recipe is simple and we simply love it.
The best part of its preparation is that I can make this milk-based pudding early in the day or the day before and chill it. Right before I put it into the oven, I slice it into triangles, top it with butter and then bake it as we are eating dinner. No fuss and by the time we've all eaten, it's ready to come out of the oven for dessert. After the hot pudding is sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon, nice and warm for all to enjoy, I'll often hear..."I want the corner...give me the middle piece...I'll take any piece you cut!" Everyone has their favorite slice, because it's that wonderful dessert that we all love.
In fact, this traditional dessert has been enjoyed and emulated over and over throughout the generations. And if you haven't tried it, then you must! I know your family will feel the same after they first taste it!
