Lahem Mishwi Ma' Laban, Lamb Steak and Yogurt Sauce on Pita **RECIPE**
Lamb Steak with Yogurt Sauce on Pita Bread
Lahmeh Bil Khubiz
2 Lamb Shoulder Steaks or favorite steaks
1 Tablespoon Allspice
1 Tablespoon Syrian Spice Blend, Datah, or more to taste
1 Tablespoon salt or to taste
Pepper to taste
Diced tomatoes, cucumbers, chopped green onion, sliced red onion, leaf lettuce
Mix the spices, salt and pepper and rub the steaks on each side. Chill for a few hours.
Prepare the fresh vegetables and set aside.
Prepare the Yogurt Sauce:
1 Cup Labneh or plain whole milk Yogurt
1 Clove garlic, crushed, minced or chopped fine, or to taste
¼ Cup Chopped Fresh Mint
½ lemon, squeezed
Salt to taste
Mix the sauce and refrigerate until the steaks are ready.
Grill the steaks for about 4 to 5 minutes on each side, depending on a medium or well done finish.
Allow the steaks to rest for 5 minutes. Then slice very thin and top the unopened pita with lettuce leaf, steak slices, veggies and yogurt sauce. Close with toothpicks or serve open.
Cook’s Notes: Depending on the thickness of the steaks, the grill time will vary. The steaks are best with a pink center. As they rest, they will continue to cook, so take them off before the preferred finish.
